by Airplane
& Yes, This Tour is Super-Limited
So Try to RSVP as Soon as You Reasonably Can
Visiting Las Vegas and want to see Antelope Canyon? Before, I'd tell you, "No way. Impossible! Can't be done." But not anymore. Now presenting our Antelope Canyon Express airplane tour. It's one of our most ambitious offerings, and includes Horseshoe Bend, Glen Canyon Dam, Lake Powell and, of course, inimitable Upper Antelope Canyon.
How You Gonna Get Here?
This tour leaves once a day. No exceptions. If you are serious about taking it, book in advance. I suggest a minimum of two weeks. The plane holds 18 passengers and it sells out quickly. It includes free hotel transfers and departs from our terminal in Boulder City, NV, a suburb of Las Vegas that takes 30 minutes to reach from The Strip.
The plane is a customized deHavilland Twin Otter aircraft designed specifically for air tour. Seating is two to the right and one to the left and you can request window seats for an additional $10. Please note that such requests are NOT guaranteed and that you'll be notified at check-in if you qualify. Windows are oversized and the aircraft's wings are attached to the top of the cabin for unobstructed views below.
If you're traveling from abroad and your English is a bit rough, we got you covered: the plane's communication system comes programmed with trip narration in multiple languages including Spanish, French, German, Chinese, etc. Contact me with your reservation number and I'll update your ticket to include the translation of your choice. It's a free service we offer.
Together or Separate?
From Boulder City, you fly east over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, Colorado River and Grand Canyon West, home of the Grand Canyon Skywalk. At this point, you're in Arizona and you'll continue flying eastward inside the National Park and more particularly the North Rim before making the descent over Lake Powell and into Page, AZ, population 7,500. Here you'll deplane and transfer to a Sprinter van for the trip to iconic Horseshoe Bend.
FYI: The plane is the fastest way to get from Vegas to Antelope Canyon. Period. End stop. Takes just 90 minutes and you get to fly over some of the most beautiful parts of northern Arizona. By comparison, it takes more than 4 hours to drive to Page, AZ. Add more time to that for bathroom breaks and food, water, gas etc. Remember you'll have to make that same drive back to Vegas if you don't plan to overnight!
Early Bird Gets The Worm
Horseshoe Bend is exactly that: a bend in the Colorado River that goes around a majestic butte. We stop at a small parking lot where you'll exit the van and make the short walk to the lookout. This is where most if not all the famous Horseshoe Bend pictures are taken (make sure your phone or camera is fully charged!). The desert-canyon panorama is insanely beautiful, with the river churning 1,000 feet below your dangling feet (if you chose to sit on the edge!).
Then it's off to Antelope Canyon, which is just 10 miles due east. Antelope is a series of slot canyons. It's Navajo name is Tsé bighánílíní, which means 'the place where water runs through the rocks. The golden, sandstone hued slots are the result of a millennia of water, wind, and erosion. The area is divided between Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon. You'll be experiencing the former. The entire ecosystem is on Indian land and requires a special visitor's permit from The Navajo Tribe.
I recommend you dress for extreme weather. Seems this area of Arizona is either very warm or hot. Cold isn't in the vocabulary. June through September are the hottest months, with peak heat in July and August (record highs have hit 120 degrees!). Knowing this, it's key to be prepared for the sun. I recommend you wear a lightweight, long-sleeve shirt, long pants, running shoes or hiking boots and a brimmed hat. Bring water and stay hydrated. A pair of sunglasses is mandatory as it's BRIGHT in the desert. Lastly, pack some Chapstick and sunblock (preferably SPF 50+) so you don't fly back with a sunburn.
Quick summary about Lake Powell: You'll see it from the airplane, either to or from Vegas. The main body of water and its “fingers" are a can't-miss. The Lake is actually an artificial reservoir that spans the border between Arizona and Utah. It's the result of the flooding of Glen Canyon by the Glen Canyon Dam (710 feet high & 5 million cubic yards of concrete!), which was built in 1963. The Lake is named after famed explorer John Wesley Powell, who explored the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon aboard an armada of three small wooden boats in 1869.
The plane ride back to Las Vegas starts in the late afternoon. You essentially go back along the same flight path that got you to Page. Expect total tour time (hotel to hotel) to be approximately nine hours. Again, I recommend you book this tour WAY in advance as there's currently just one tour a day. I also recommend you book it online as that's where you'll get the cheapest price. In sum, this is the only tour of its kind from Las Vegas. Plus, this tour has to be by plane as helicopters CAN’T FLY as far as Page, AZ. This is a good thing because planes can hold 3x as many people as helicopters, thus making the price super-affordable.
